Steering System Retrofits: Upgrading to modern standards

There is no time like present – this applies to your boat maintenance and upgrades.  For those of you with older vessels, constantly checking your systems to ensue seaworthiness is essential.  This piece is written to help you consider all the options open to you in upgrading your steering system and transforming your boat into a newer / better version of itself!

Step One:  Assessing the need for an upgrade

Conduct a full review of the current state of your boats steering system.  Traditional mechanical set ups can have worn out components and hence may not be operating in a truly responsible or reliable manner.  If this is identified, then a retrofit may be in order to provide safety and required performance on the water.

Step Two:  How to choose the right retrofit solution

There are many options available, including a like for like replacement of the older system, alternatively depending on your needs and budget the newer technology on the market - hydraulic steering may offer you a solution. 

Other important factors to consider:

·        Responsiveness / maneuverability of the proposes system

·        Ease of installation – DIY is an option

·        Compatibility with modern navigation technologies

·        Environment – do you live in an area with extremes of temperature?

·        Corrosion - does the solution you seek resist corrosion?

·        What is it that you are trying to achieve
